With extensive experience in International Commercial Law and Corporate Law, he regularly advises on multi-jurisdictional transactions, corporate disputes and highly complex international contracts, while also acting as a legal expert in transnational litigation proceedings.
He is listed as an arbitrator with CREL – the Centre for Extrajudicial Dispute Resolution in Luanda, bringing significant experience in international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
Prior to joining Nexus Approach and the Legal Approach International Law Network, he held positions at Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Sierra Portugal (Sonae Sierra) and the Portuguese Competition Authority, where he developed expertise in economic regulation, financial markets and investment.
Hugo Alves holds a Bachelor's Degree, a Master's Degree and a PhD in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon.
He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Katyavala Bwila University in Benguela, Guest Assistant Professor at Lusíada University of Lisbon and Scientific Advisor to the Faculty of Law of Bissau.
He is the author of several legal publications in the fields of Commercial Law, Law of Obligations and Transport Law, including the monographs Do penhor (On pledge), Dação em cumprimento (Acceptance in lieu of performance of contract) and Direito Aéreo (Aviation Law).
Alongside his professional practice, he maintains a strong academic and scientific career. He is a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches courses in Commercial Law, Banking Law, Maritime Law, Air Law, Transport Law, Law of Obligations and Contract Law.
